My name is Tricia LaRue, and I am the Teacher Librarian at Niver Creek Middle. This is my 5th year with Adams 12 Five Star Schools and my 10th year teaching. Linda Newman is the Media Clerk. One of us will usually be here between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. for student check out, research, parent check out, and to help with anything else we can do to assist the students and staff at Niver Creek. If students would like to visit the library before school starts to check out, read, or use the computers, they simply need to get a pass from Mrs. LaRue or Mrs. Newman.
We have two reading programs we are continuing at Niver Creek. First, students are invited to read and vote on their favorite Blue Spruce Book Award Nominee. Each year, students across Colorado nominate their favorite new books. Then, the books with the most votes are added to a list for the following year. If students read 3 books on that list, they could vote for their favorite. Voting for the 2008 winner was turned in February 18. The statewide winner is Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince by JK Rowling. Nominees for next year are listed on the link below.
Next, Niver Creek students will be participating in the district wide Battle of the Books competition again this year. Students interested in being a part of the competition create a group of 4 to work with and read as many books as possible on the Battle of the Books list. In April, teams compete against one another using their knowledge about the books they read to find which team will participate in the Adams 12 Battle of the Books competition. Last year, a group of 6th grade students competed against the 8 other middle schools in the district. I can't wait to see who competes this year! Click on the link below to get the current Battle of the Books list. If you are interested in a little friendly competition, stop by the library to get a sign up sheet.
This year , we tried 2 other new activities at Niver Creek. Students had the chance to participate in Teen Read Week October 12-18. During that week, they had the opportunity voted at www.ala.org/teenstopten on their favorite book on the Teens' Top Ten List.
Here is the list of winners:
Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J. K. Rowling
Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney
Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead
Saving the World and Other Extreme Sports by James Patterson
City of Bones by Cassandra Clare
The Sweet Far Thing by Libba Bray
Extras by Scott Westerfeld
Before I Die by Jenny Downham
Twisted by Laurie Halse Anderson
The second new activity we have added is our library blog. What's a blog? A blog is simply a website where information can be posted on a continuous basis. People can comment on it if they wish. Our blog is about what books. This is a place where the students and staff can share what they are reading and post reviews. What better way is there to find a new book to read than to see what your friends are reading? Click here to visit the blog, or you can use the link at the top of the page.
